The Face the Mill Shows the Street
The Goto Textile Front Gate and Wooden Fence (後藤織物表門及び板塀, Gotō Orimono Omotemon oyobi Itabei) are a timber gate and board fence built around 1925 in Higashi 1-chome, Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 27, 2006. Set back slightly from the road south of the Main House, they form the formal frontage of the mill.
The gate is a Munamon, a simple roofed gate, 4.5 metres wide, with a gabled roof of pantiles. The central 2.1 metres form the opening, closed by a pair of sliding doors. Flanking walls have clapboard below and white lime plaster above. From the gate a board fence runs 11 metres to the east and 12 metres to the west, 23 metres in all.
Kiryu City's survey gives the flanking walls as 1.15 metres wide each, with the doors sliding into them. The fence is now capped with sheet iron but was originally tiled.
Why It Was Registered
The gate and fence were listed for their contribution to the historic landscape of the nation. From the street, the mill is essentially this gate and this fence. Kiryu City regards the gate, board fence and bamboo fence as indispensable to the look of Goto Textile Mill, carrying the standing of a weaving house that goes back to the Meiji era.
The date is telling. The 1925 house plan shows the warehouse, kettle house, storage shed and storehouse where they stand today, so the layout of the compound took its present form around then. The Goto Textile Front Gate and Wooden Fence belong to the same moment: while the works behind were being fitted out, the public face was put in order too.
If the factory and storehouses are the substance of a weaving house, this gate is what it presented to the town. Surviving together with the buildings it screens, it keeps the whole compound readable as a working property rather than a set of isolated structures.
What to Look For
Standing in the street, notice first that the gate is pulled back from the roadway. The small forecourt this creates absorbs carts and deliveries while keeping the frontage understated.
The doors part to the sides and disappear into the flanking walls. Unlike swinging doors they never project into the street or the yard, even when fully open. A munamon sets its gabled roof directly on the posts, a light and plain form, but the contrast of white plaster and dark clapboard gives the front a crisp, orderly look.
The two runs of fence are not quite equal, 11 metres on the east and 12 metres on the west. Look above them at the layered rooflines: the Main House just inside the gate, the factory roofs rising behind. Even from the street you can sense a workplace spreading out beyond the fence.
Visiting
Because the Goto Textile Front Gate and Wooden Fence face the street, you can see them from outside the property at any time. Going through the gate requires a reserved tour. If you photograph the frontage, keep clear of traffic and be considerate of the neighbouring homes.
