A Public Hall Facing the Gunma Prefectural Office
Gunma Hall (群馬会館) is an early-Showa reinforced-concrete public hall at Otemachi 2-chome, Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture, standing opposite the prefectural office's Showa Building, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 20, 1996. According to Gunma Prefecture, it was built to commemorate the enthronement of the Showa Emperor and was the first public hall in the prefecture.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as four storeys above ground and one below, with a building area of 1,319 square metres; registration number 10-0002, owned by Gunma Prefecture. Gunma Prefecture dates its completion to 1930, while the Agency and Maebashi City give 1929.
A Pair with the Prefectural Office
According to Maebashi City, the hall was built the year after the prefectural office (now the Showa Building, 1928), across the road to the east, for large ceremonies and events, and shares its design. Both were designed by Sato Koichi, founder of the architecture department at Waseda University, who also designed the Okuma Auditorium, Hibiya Public Hall and the prefectural offices of Miyagi, Tochigi and Shiga.
According to Gunma Prefecture, the interior was renovated for the 1983 Akagi National Sports Festival while keeping the original exterior, and the building is still widely used as a public hall (the Agency's note dates the renovation to 1982).

It seats 410, and the ground-floor reception room is lavishly finished in marble; the Gunma Kaikan Restaurant occupies the basement (Gunma Prefecture).
Visiting Gunma Hall
According to Gunma Prefecture, the exterior of Gunma Hall may be viewed freely without booking. Interior tours are offered on weekdays from 9:00 to 17:00, except during the New Year closure; apply to the management office (027-226-4850) between six and two days before your visit. Rooms in use may not be shown.
The address is 2-1-1 Otemachi, Maebashi City, about 6 to 7 minutes by bus from JR Maebashi or Shin-Maebashi Station or Chuo-Maebashi Station on the Jomo Electric Railway. Use the prefectural office car park (Gunma Prefecture).
