Village Skill Behind an Ingenious Kabuki Stage

The Kamimiharada Kabuki Stage Equipment and Operation (上三原田の歌舞伎舞台の装置・操作, Kamimiharada no Kabuki Butai no Sochi Sosa) is the skill of operating the machinery of a rural kabuki stage in Kamimiharada, Akagi-machi, Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture, which in 1961 was selected as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property Requiring Documentation.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs classifies it as a custom, with no specific preservation body. Rather than being designated, it is selected under a system for recording folk practices so that they are documented.

The Agency describes the skill of operating the Kamimiharada kabuki stage, whose mechanism is unlike any other in Japan. It is now handed down by the young men of Kamimiharada, known as the wakaren.

The Stage Machinery

The stage itself is separately designated by the state as a tangible folk cultural property. The Agency dates it to 1819: a thatched building with a hipped roof, 30.5 shaku wide and 21 shaku deep.

Its side and back walls, called gando, fold outward to widen the stage at the sides and rear. Inside the revolving stage is a lift, there is a sliding stage, and a flying mechanism hoists the upper platform into the roof space.

The Agency stresses that, though small, it has features comparable to the machinery of a modern theatre. The Kamimiharada Kabuki Stage Equipment and Operation covers the human skill of working these devices.

Why It Matters

The Agency values the operation, carried out by the whole team working in unison, as a precious skill, bringing modern theatre-like effects to a village stage.

Shibukawa City explains that the audience seating, too, has always been built by local people for each performance and taken down afterwards, using local cedar, pine and other timber, bamboo and silkworm baskets typical of this sericulture area. Operating the stage and building the seating are both handed down as community work.

For the stage's 200th anniversary in 2019, the largest form of seating, with seven arched roof beams called hanegi, was built, and about 4,000 people attended, according to the city.

Seeing the Stage in Action

Shibukawa City says operation practice and performances by the kabuki club of the local Mihara Elementary School are shown every year in early to mid-November, with dates announced on the city website. In 2026, performances marking 150 years since the founder's death are planned for 7 and 8 November.
