What is the Machida Family Residence Wall?
The Machida Family Residence Wall (町田家住宅塀, Machida-ke Jūtaku Hei) is a Meiji-era roofed timber board fence enclosing the west and north sides of the L-shaped Machida family estate in Nakanojo, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2001.
It runs for 83 meters in total. The Agency for Cultural Affairs classes it as an "other structure", counted as one unit, and dates it to the Meiji era, which began in 1868. Of the five registered structures at the Machida estate, it is by far the longest.
Why the wall was registered
The Machida Family Residence Wall was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on August 28, 2001, under number 10-0084, the last in the run of five consecutive numbers given to the estate, for contributing to the historic landscape of the country.
The Agency credits the Machida wall with two roles: it marks the boundary of the estate, and it gives the estate an orderly appearance. Nobody lives or stores goods in it the way they do in the main house or storehouses, but it draws the outline of the property and separates inside from outside. Registering all five structures together kept not just the buildings but the edge of the estate as part of the landscape.
What to look for along the Machida wall
A line tracing an L-shaped plot
The Machida estate is L-shaped, turning at a right angle to the west behind the main house. The Machida Family Residence Wall closes off the west and north sides of that plot, and its 83-meter length is a reminder that the estate runs much deeper than its street frontage suggests.
A light fence, open under the ridge
According to the Agency, the Machida Family Residence Wall is a board fence with its own small roof, built light with an open gap left beneath the ridge. In other words, the boards stop short of the roof and leave a slot of open space below it. It looks far lighter than an earthen or stone wall, with the roof line and the board face running on and on.
A back gate to the garden
Roughly halfway along the west side, the Machida wall has a single gate, which the Agency notes led to the back garden. Besides the yakuimon gate on Route 353 at the front, the estate also had a way in from the rear.
Visiting the Machida Family Residence Wall
The Machida Family Residence Wall forms the outer edge of a private estate, and we found no notice of public access to the grounds (checked October 2, 2026). It runs along the west and north sides, away from the estate's front on Route 353, and we have not confirmed how much of it can be seen from the surrounding streets.
If you look at it from nearby streets, please do not enter through the back gate or photograph over the fence into the grounds. Directions from Nakanojo Station are on the Machida Family Residence page.
