About the Ogino Family Residence New Storehouse
The Ogino Family Residence New Storehouse (荻野家住宅新蔵, Ogino-ke Jūtaku Shingura) is a two-story Dozo-zukuri fireproof storehouse of the early Showa era standing at the west end of the Ogino property in Shimonita, Gunma Prefecture, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on August 7, 2009. True to its name, it is the newest of the storehouses, with a building area of 45 square meters.
The Ogino Family Residence New Storehouse stands a little apart from the North and South Storehouses, its ridge running north to south. It measures 9.5 meters by 4.7 meters, and where the other storehouses have gabled roofs, this one has a hipped Yosemune-zukuri roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles.
How the New Storehouse Is Built
The ground-floor entrance sits in the middle of the east side, and two upper-floor windows are fitted with iron doors. The roof is framed with a Truss, the same Western-style system used in the North Storehouse of 1905.
The east side, with its door, faces into the compound. The west side, the back of the building, borders a channel called the West Moat (西堀), and beyond it runs an old road. Seen from that road, the Ogino Family Residence New Storehouse serves as the back face of the property and keeps the view behind the plot in order.
Why It Was Registered
The New Storehouse carries registration number 10-0275 and was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The shop storehouse and main house hold the street front and the row house holds the south lane, while the Ogino Family Residence New Storehouse completes the west side.
Visiting the Ogino Family Residence New Storehouse
The Ogino Family Residence New Storehouse is privately owned and not open to the public.
Standing at the west end of the plot, its back may be visible from the old road across the moat, though we have not checked this on site. Please stay off the grounds and view it only from the public road.
