United Church of Christ in Japan Shimamura Church Chapel (日本基督教団島村教会教会堂) is a small timber church in Sakaijimamura, Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture, built in 1897 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2008. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it simply as a small wooden chapel standing in farmland.
It is timber, single-storey with a 2-storey section, tile-roofed, with a building area of 86 square meters. The sanctuary occupies the single-storey north part, and the south end rises to 2 storeys. It was extended in 1950: Isesaki City records that a 2-storey meeting room was added that year, and that in 1959 the pulpit on the north front of the sanctuary was enlarged.
How the Chapel Is Built
Shimamura Church Chapel was registered on April 18, 2008, as number 10-0257.
The roof is laid in pantiles. Over the single-storey north part it is a plain gable; over the 2-storey south part it is half-hipped, with the top of the gable end clipped back. Two roof forms on one small building give it a different outline from each end.
The walls are horizontal clapboard below and plaster on the 2nd floor. A gabled entrance porch projects from the east side toward the south, and the Agency singles out its simple half-timbered treatment: exposed timber framing with white infill, a nod to English timber-frame building.
The roof is carried on a king-post truss, a Western system in which a central vertical post supports the ridge. It shows how the farming believers of a Meiji village put together a Western-style church.
What to Look For
Walk around to the east side to face the entrance. The gabled porch and the grid of its timbers against white walls are the face of the building.
Then compare the 2 ends. The north part has a straightforward gable; the south part carries the half-hipped roof, and only its upper walls are white plaster. It is worth asking if the change from clapboard to plaster tracks the building's later extension.
With nothing tall around it, you can see the whole chapel across the fields.
Visiting the Chapel
The exterior can be viewed at any time. Interior visits are reportedly possible for groups only, by reservation through the Isesaki City Cultural Properties Division. Check Sunday service times with the church.
