A Townhouse That Turns Its Face to the Street
The Soga Family Residence Main House (曽我家住宅主屋, Soga-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) is a single-storey timber Machiya townhouse of the late Meiji period in Honchō 1-chōme, Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, entered on the register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on 18 October 2006.
It stands right on Honchō-dōri and covers 127 square metres. The shop occupies the street end; behind it, past a corridor and a small courtyard, come the reception rooms, which Kiryu City describes as a run of three.
The two official descriptions disagree on the size of the shop. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives it as four ken square, about 7.3 metres each way, while Kiryu City gives a frontage of three and a half ken. That is a difference of nearly 1 metre. A Front Without a Front Door
The main house was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape of the country. What the Agency singles out is a street elevation designed differently from the ordinary Kiryu townhouse.
The difference is the door. Most townhouses on Honchō-dōri open straight onto the street. The Soga Main House does not. Its east side, facing the road, is a row of lattice windows, and the entrance is tucked into a lean-to (Geya) on the south side instead.
No source explains the choice. What can be said is that the south side faces the garden that runs from the gateposts to the Inari shrine, so a caller would have come in through the gate and walked round to the door rather than stepping in off the pavement.
The roof is a gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) form covered in pantiles (Sangawara-buki), except at the street end, which is hipped (Yosemune-zukuri). Turning the roof down at that end brings its eaves round to face the road. The north wall is sealed in white lime plaster (Shikkui); Kiryu City describes it as a fireproof, storehouse-style wall.
What to Look At
Start with the east face on Honchō-dōri. From across the street you can take in the unbroken lattice and the hipped end of the roof above it in one view, and the absence of a door becomes obvious.
Then move along to the gateposts and look at the side facing south. The projecting lean-to and the entrance set into it are the other face of the building, and between the posts you can see the roof of the reception rooms running back behind the shop.
The white north wall is part of a continuous fire barrier shared with the storehouse and the new reception wing. Looking along it at an angle from the street, you can follow the plastered line westward into the plot.
Visiting the Soga Family Residence Main House
The Soga Family Residence Main House is a private home and the interior is not open. It can be viewed only from Honchō-dōri, and the grounds should not be entered.
Kiryu City asks that permission be obtained before photographing buildings in the preservation district. The lattice front is fully visible from the pavement, and the far side of the street gives the best standing point.
