The Storehouse Behind the Main House
The Former Fukui Family Residence Storehouse (旧福井家住宅蔵) is an earthen-walled storehouse of about 1912 in Higashitsuchidocho, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on November 8, 2004 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a 2-storey earthen-walled storehouse with a tiled roof and a building area of 25 square metres; registration number 34-0064.
A Storehouse Joined to the Main House
The storehouse is a gabled building running north to south and entered at the gable end, with its front room (kuramae) running into the north side of the west wing of the main house (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It measures 6 metres by 4 metres.
The roof is of pantiles and the walls are plastered; between the ground and upper floors a moulded band carries a row of drip tiles around the building (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The upper gable has a window under a small hood.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency notes that it is built with the same care as the main house, and registered it as a model of design.
What to Look For
Look for the moulded band and drip tiles running round the building between the floors, and the hooded window in the upper gable (Agency for Cultural Affairs), as well as the way the plastered walls lead through the front room into the main house.
Visiting
The residence served as Onomichi City's Literature Memorial Room, which closed at the end of March 2020 (paper in the research reports of the Chugoku Chapter of the Architectural Institute of Japan). No official notice of the interior reopening has been found since.
