Instruments and Tools of a Rice-Planting Tradition
The Hayashida Implements of Kawahigashi (川東のはやし田用具) is 313 implements for hayashida rice planting handed down at Kawahigashi, Kitahiroshima Town, Yamagata District, Hiroshima Prefecture, designated an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property in 1963.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records them as owned by the Kawahigashi Dengaku group and kept in the Kawahigashi Hayashida Implements Storehouse.
According to the Agency, planting rice in particular fields to music is called hayashida, hana-taue or taikoda, a custom still strong in the Chugoku mountains.
The Collection
According to the Agency, hayashida was once widespread; the Kawahigashi district of the former Chiyoda Town is one of its centres and has kept implements of an old style well.
Kitahiroshima Town notes that the storehouse holds the instruments, costumes and farm tools used in planting to the old field music of the area.
What to Look For
The Agency values the collection as a comprehensive set of implements for hayashida planting in the district, a typical example of farming techniques and ritual.
Together, the instruments, costumes and tools show how hayashida was at once farm work, ritual and performance.
