Kanemitsu Sake Brewery was founded in 1880 (Meiji 13) in Kurose-cho, a district known for its agricultural heritage within Higashihiroshima City. The eight registered structures include the Packaging Building, Bottling House, Brewing Storehouse, Storage Warehouse, Detached Residence, Well House, Gate and Wall, and a brick Chimney. Together, they form a cohesive architectural landscape that embodies the culture and craftsmanship of Japan's sake-brewing industry.

The Packaging Building served a vital role in the brewery's operations as the facility where finished sake was prepared for distribution. Its architectural character reflects the industrial building traditions of the Showa era, featuring materials and construction techniques typical of sake brewery complexes in the Hiroshima region.

Why Was It Designated as a Cultural Property?

Japan's Registered Tangible Cultural Property system was established in 1996 to protect historically significant buildings that might otherwise be lost to urban development and changing lifestyles. To qualify, structures must generally be at least 50 years old and meet criteria such as contributing to the historical landscape of the nation.

The Kanemitsu Sake Brewery buildings were recognized because they collectively contribute to the historic landscape of the Kurose district. The brewery complex preserves the architectural character of a traditional Japanese sake-producing facility, with structures dating from various periods that demonstrate the evolution of brewing technology and building practices over more than a century. The brick chimney, for instance, features English bond brickwork with decorative banding at the top and stands approximately 12 meters tall, serving as a visible landmark of the district.

Furthermore, in December 2024, UNESCO inscribed "Traditional Sake Making" on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, further elevating the global recognition of Japan's brewing traditions. The preserved brewery buildings of Kanemitsu Sake Brewery serve as physical embodiments of these now world-recognized traditions.

Architectural Highlights and Attractions

Visitors approaching the brewery along National Route 375 are greeted by the striking presence of the brewery complex, with its distinctive layered facades of charred cedar board siding (yakisugi), white plaster walls, and red clay tile roofs. These three materials create beautiful horizontal lines across the building surfaces—a visual testament to the accumulated layers of brewing history.

The brick chimney, rising behind the Packaging Building, is one of the most iconic features of the complex. Built during the early Showa period with a square base measuring approximately 1.5 meters per side, it reaches a height of about 12 meters and features decorative brickwork at its crown, reinforced with steel framing. This chimney is visible from a considerable distance and has become a beloved symbol of the local community.

While the registered cultural property buildings are not open for public tours, visitors can experience the spirit of the brewery through the beautifully renovated Brewery Direct Sales Shop (蔵元直売所) located on the premises. Designed by FATHOM, an interior design firm based in Hiroshima, the shop was inspired by the aesthetic of the brewery's interior, incorporating plastered walls reminiscent of shrines and temples, and innovative touches such as window ledges embedded with crushed sake bottle glass. The direct sales shop won the 2023 Good Design Award for its sensitive integration of tradition and modernity.

The shop offers the brewery's flagship brands—"Kamo Kinshu" and "Sakurafubuki"—alongside fruit liqueurs made with lemon and strawberry. All sake is kept under refrigeration to maintain consistent quality. Visitors can also find brewery merchandise such as traditional maekake aprons and jinichi bags, as well as snacks that pair well with the sake.

The shop is open from 10:00 to 17:15, closed on Sundays and national holidays. Look for charming cat figurines placed throughout the interior—a reflection of the brewer's personal fondness for felines.
