A Stone Rampart Around a Hilltop Estate
The Murakami Family Residence Stone Wall (村上家住宅石垣, Murakami-ke Jūtaku Ishigaki) is a late Edo period (1830–1867) dry-stone retaining wall in Imazu-cho, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 10 September 2010 under registration number 34-0103.
The wall wraps the estate on three sides, running from the south face round the west and on to the north. It stands 4.2 metres high at the southwest corner and 2.3 metres at the northwest. Its length is given as 77 metres in the structure field of the national database and as 76 metres in the same database's explanatory text, a difference of 1 metre.
The estate sits on a hillside looking south over Matsunaga Bay, and every building on it, from the main house to the storehouses, stands on the level platform this wall creates.
Why It Was Registered
The Murakami Family Residence Stone Wall is laid in the Uchikomi-hagi manner, with stones roughly dressed so they sit closer together, combined with random coursing of stones of varied sizes. Each corner is locked with Sangi-zumi, long rectangular blocks laid with their long sides alternating left and right, the same technique used on castle walls.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the wall as giving the site a castle-like presence. That a private household finished its corners the way castle builders did says a good deal about the family's means.
Parts of the wall bear traces of a fire in the Meiji era. Given that the main house, the Udegimon gate and the barn are all dated to late Meiji, the connection is tempting, but published sources say nothing about when the fire happened or what it destroyed.
What to Look For
The most striking view of the Murakami Family Residence Stone Wall is at the southwest corner, where it reaches 4.2 metres. From the lane below, the alternating corner blocks of the sangi-zumi stand out clearly.
Walk round toward the northwest and the wall steps down until it is only 2.3 metres high at that corner, following the slope of the hill.
If you spot scorched or discoloured stone faces, you may be looking at the Meiji-era fire damage the Agency for Cultural Affairs mentions.
Visiting
Because the Murakami Family Residence Stone Wall forms the outer edge of the property, it is the easiest of the eight structures to see from outside. It is still part of a private home, so please do not climb or touch the stones. The grounds within are not open, and as of September 2026 there were no announced visit arrangements.
