A 1940 Gate and Wall Around the Sanctuary
Sakakiyama Hachiman Shrine Gate and Wall (榊山八幡神社神門及び塀, Sakakiyama Hachiman Jinja Shinmon oyobi Hei) is the gate and enclosing wall around the main hall of Sakakiyama Hachiman Shrine in Mitsu, Akitsu-cho, Higashihiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture; built in 1940, it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on April 3, 2020, under registration number 34-0275, classed as a structure rather than a building.
On the highest terrace at the north end of the precinct, the 1907 main hall sits inside this enclosure. The gate is 1.8 metres wide, and the wall runs 78 metres in total. Set that against the main hall's building area of 22 square metres and you get a sense of how generous a margin the wall draws around the sanctuary.
Added 33 years after the main hall, the Sakakiyama Hachiman Shrine Gate and Wall turned the hilltop sanctuary into a self-contained sacred precinct.
Plain but Finely Made
The gate has a Kirizuma-zukuri gabled roof in Hongawarabuki tile and is a one-bay udegi-mon, a bracket-arm gate: arms cantilevered fore and aft from the main posts carry the roof, and rear posts stand behind the main posts to steady them. The paired doors are framed panel doors with lattice in their upper parts, so even when closed they let you sense the space beyond.
The wall carries a roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles. Its surface is Shinkabe, with posts left exposed, finished in white Shikkui plaster, and vertical lattice is set into the upper portion.
Unlike the richly carved main hall, the Sakakiyama Hachiman Shrine Gate and Wall has no showy ornament. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as simple yet high in quality, framing the solemn setting of the main hall with dignity. The criterion is contribution to the historic landscape of the country. Its job is not to dress up the sanctuary but to enclose it and give it stillness, and that is what earned the listing.
What to Look For
At the gate, look at how the posts work together. Behind the two main posts visible from the front stand the rear posts, while the arms take the weight of the roof. Through the lattice at the top of the doors you can just glimpse the front of the main hall.
Because the wall circles the main hall, walking its outside gives you changing views of the sanctuary. Watch the rhythm of the vertical lattice and the way the exposed posts divide the white plaster at even intervals; this is careful work from 1940.
Compare the roofing materials too: formal round tile on the gate, pantiles on the wall, green copper on the main hall. The grey line of the wall's tiles draws a level border at the foot of the sanctuary roof.
Visiting the Gate and Wall
The Sakakiyama Hachiman Shrine Gate and Wall marks the boundary of the sanctuary, and entry inside the wall is not offered. You view it from outside. Whether the gate doors are opened likely depends on ceremonies, so contact the shrine office if you want to confirm.
There is no published photography policy. Photographing the gate and wall from the grounds is within ordinary etiquette, but refrain during ceremonies.
