A Stone Platform Behind the Station
The Former JNR Tomiuchi Line Tomiuchi Station Platform (旧国鉄富内線富内駅プラットフォーム) is a stone station platform of 1923 in Hobetsu-Tomiuchi, Mukawa, Yufutsu District, Hokkaido, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 28, 2001 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a stone platform with an area of 600 square metres; registration number 01-0036.
Two Courses of Stone
The Former JNR Tomiuchi Line Tomiuchi Station Platform is built of two courses of stone and runs along the back of the station building (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is about 75 metres long, with ramps at both ends.
It is dated to 1923, like the station building, and the yard tracks run parallel to it (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Passengers stepped out of the station house, up onto this platform and into the train.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency notes that after the line closed in 1986, local residents formed the Hobetsu Ginga Railway Village Committee (穂別銀河鉄道の里づくり委員会) and built their community work around keeping and using the railway facilities and equipment. The platform, with the building and tracks, has been at the centre of that effort.
It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.
What to Look For
Look at the edge of the platform, where the two courses of stone show. From the end of the platform, looking along the track side, you can see how the courses sit one on the other.
The ramps at each end show how the step between platform and ground was handled.
Visiting
The platform is in the open and can be seen from outside. The Japan Travel and Tourism Association lists the site as free to visit.
