Japan's Only Meeting Hall in the Form of a Guandi Temple

The Hakodate Chuka Kaikan (Chinese Association Hall) (函館中華会館) is a meeting hall in the form of a Guandi temple of 1910 in Omachi, Hakodate City, Hokkaido, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on April 24, 2001 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a single-storey brick building with a tiled roof, covering 374 square metres; registration number 01-0028.

A Hall Dedicated to Guandi

Hakodate Chuka Kaikan consists of a main hall dedicated to Guandi, wings reaching forward on either side, and an entrance block that closes the front (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a brick building put up after the great Hakodate fire of 1907.

It is the only surviving meeting hall in Japan in the form of a Guandi temple, and its interior has the ornate, mature air of the late Qing dynasty (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Hokkaido Tourism Organization says Chinese carpenters and carvers were invited and materials imported, and that building took about three years.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape, a Guandi-temple-style hall that has become a symbol of the area.

What to Look For

Look for the main hall framed by its wings and entrance block, and the brick exterior (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Visiting

According to the Hokkaido Tourism Organization, the interior is not open, so only the exterior can be seen; there is no parking. It is about a 5-minute walk from the Omachi stop of the Hakodate tram.
