Introduction

Nestled at the foot of Mount Shiribetsu in the village of Rusutsu, Hokkaido, the Hinoki Shinyaku Rusutsu Mountain Lodge (ヒノキ新薬株式会社ルスツ山寮) stands as a remarkable testament to the genius of one of Japan's most enigmatic architects. Designed by Seiichi Shirai — widely known as the "Philosopher Architect" — and completed in 1972, this corporate retreat is the only building Shirai ever created in Hokkaido. In March 2024, it was officially registered as a national Registered Tangible Cultural Property (登録有形文化財), recognizing its outstanding architectural and historical significance.

The lodge was commissioned by Hinoki Shinyaku Co., Ltd., a cosmetics and pharmaceutical company, as a retreat facility for its employees and associates. With its striking blend of brick, stone, and concrete set against the dramatic backdrop of Hokkaido's volcanic landscape, the Rusutsu Mountain Lodge offers visitors an extraordinary encounter with postwar Japanese architectural artistry in one of the country's most beautiful natural settings.

Historical Background

The story of the Rusutsu Mountain Lodge begins with a chance encounter in Europe. Takehiko Abe, president of Hinoki Shinyaku, met Hyosuke Shirai — the eldest son of architect Seiichi Shirai — while studying abroad. This personal connection led to a commission that would result in one of Shirai's most distinctive works.

Seiichi Shirai (1905–1983) was born in Kyoto and studied philosophy at Heidelberg University and Berlin University in Germany before returning to Japan in 1933. Rather than pursuing an academic career in philosophy, he became a self-taught architect, eventually earning recognition as one of the most original and uncompromising designers of the Showa era. His notable works include the Shinwa Bank Head Office in Sasebo (winner of the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize), the Noa Building in Tokyo's Azabudai district, and the Shibuya Ward Shoto Museum of Art — his final masterpiece.

The Rusutsu Mountain Lodge was completed in 1972, the same year as the Sapporo Winter Olympics. At the completion celebration on September 2 of that year, notable guests included the legendary sumo grand champion Taiho and actress Yoshimura Mari. The renowned composer Koichi Sugiyama — later famous for the Dragon Quest video game music — composed a piece entitled "Gathering at Rusutsu" (ルスツに集いて) to commemorate the occasion.

Why It Was Designated a Cultural Property

On November 24, 2023, the Council for Cultural Affairs recommended the Rusutsu Mountain Lodge for registration as a Tangible Cultural Property (building). The registration was officially completed on March 6, 2024. The designation recognized several key qualities of the building.

First, the lodge is significant as the only architectural work by Seiichi Shirai in all of Hokkaido, making it an irreplaceable part of the prefecture's cultural heritage. Second, the building showcases Shirai's distinctive design philosophy, which set him apart from the mainstream modernist movement that dominated postwar Japanese architecture. His approach combined deep philosophical contemplation with bold sculptural forms, earning him the epithet "Philosopher Architect."

The council specifically noted the building's remarkable exterior, which features a long, gently sloped gable roof over the two-story structure, with outer walls finished in locally sourced Hokkaido bricks of varying tonal depth combined with natural stone masonry. The interior was equally praised for its high level of construction craftsmanship, particularly the cantilevered staircase with its exceptionally thin slab landing in the main atrium — a signature example of Shirai's sculptural approach to architectural detailing.

Architectural Highlights

The Rusutsu Mountain Lodge is a two-story building of reinforced concrete and partial steel-frame construction, with a metal-plate roof covering a total building area of 812 square meters. Its elongated form stretches across the landscape under a broad, low-pitched gable roof that echoes the gentle contours of the surrounding mountains.

The exterior walls are among the building's most captivating features. Shirai selected Hokkaido-produced bricks with rich tonal variation — ranging from deep earth tones to warm reddish hues — and combined them with natural stone to create a facade of exceptional texture and warmth. This careful material selection allows the building to harmonize beautifully with the volcanic landscape of Mount Shiribetsu while retaining Shirai's unmistakable artistic signature.

Inside, the ground floor features a dramatic double-height atrium that serves as the main gathering space. The centerpiece of this space is a cantilevered staircase with a remarkably thin concrete landing, appearing to float effortlessly within the void. This kind of sculptural structural element — what the designation documentation describes as "chōso-teki zōkei" (彫塑的造形, sculptural form) — is characteristic of Shirai's work, where engineering and artistry become indistinguishable.

The expansive grounds also include a nine-hole golf course and a dedicated tea ceremony room, reflecting the cultural mission that Hinoki Shinyaku has long maintained alongside its business activities.

Visitor Information

The Hinoki Shinyaku Rusutsu Mountain Lodge is a privately owned corporate facility and is not generally open to the public for casual visits. However, the building can occasionally be viewed from the surrounding area, and special events hosted by Hinoki Shinyaku — such as the 2024 cultural property registration commemorative party — have included tea ceremonies and lectures open to invited guests.

Visitors interested in the architecture of Seiichi Shirai can appreciate the building's distinctive exterior and setting from the public road. The village of Rusutsu and the surrounding area offer excellent opportunities to combine an architectural pilgrimage with outdoor recreation and scenic enjoyment.

The lodge is located approximately 90 minutes by car from Sapporo via National Route 230, passing through the scenic Jozankei Onsen area and over Nakayama Pass. From New Chitose Airport, the journey takes approximately 90 minutes via National Route 276 through Shikotsu Lake.

The village of Rusutsu and its environs offer a wealth of experiences for visitors. Mount Shiribetsu (尻別岳), rising to 1,107 meters directly behind the lodge, is a popular hiking destination with panoramic views of Mount Yotei and Lake Toya from its summit. Mount Yotei itself, often called "Ezo Fuji" for its resemblance to Mount Fuji, dominates the northern skyline and is one of Hokkaido's most iconic landmarks.

Rusutsu Resort, one of Hokkaido's premier ski and amusement destinations, offers year-round activities including skiing, snowboarding, hot-air balloon rides, and a large amusement park. The Michi-no-Eki (Roadside Station) 230 Rusutsu provides local agricultural products, fresh vegetables, and regional specialties with a stunning view of Mount Yotei.
