What Is Higashitada Mushoan?

Higashitada Mushoan (東多田夢勝庵, Higashitada Mushōan) is the estate of a former village headman in Higashitada 2-chome, Kawanishi City, Hyogo Prefecture, where six structures led by a late Edo-period main house and a gatehouse dated 1863 were registered together as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on 29 March 2019.

The name joins the district, Higashitada, to the estate's own name, Mushoan; the Agency for Cultural Affairs gives the reading as Higashitada Mushōan. The agency describes the house as the former home of the village Shōya, or headman, of a settlement on the east side of the Ina River, and calls its main house a large farmhouse at the core of the traditional village landscape. The six registrations are numbered 28-709 to 28-714, and the owner is Plantec Co., Ltd.

Six Structures, Late Edo to Early Meiji

The agency's database dates the six parts of Higashitada Mushoan as follows. All fall between the late Edo period and the first years of Meiji.

  • Main House: late Edo (1751 to 1830), altered around 1935 and around 1969
  • Nagayamon Gate: 1863, altered in 1935 and around 1980
  • Roji Gate and Garden Wall: late Edo, altered in the early Meiji era
  • Storehouse: early Meiji (1868 to 1882)
  • Rear Gate and North Wall, and West Wall: both late Edo

Only the gatehouse carries a single year; the others are dated by period. All six were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape of the country. Kawanishi City's list of cultural properties counts the estate as "Main House and five other structures", registered on 29 March 2019.

How the Higashitada Mushoan Estate Is Laid Out

Put the agency's six descriptions side by side and a plan of Higashitada Mushoan emerges. The front of the estate is its south-east corner, where an L-shaped Nagayamon gatehouse opens one gateway to the east and another to the south. The Main House stands at the back of the plot, toward the north, facing south. Between them, a plastered garden wall divides the forecourt.

That wall runs north from the west end of the gatehouse's rear face, turns east in front of the Main House to frame a small Roji gate, then turns north again to meet the middle of the house front. A guest walking in from the main gate would have been steered by wall and gate straight to the reception rooms.

The north-west corner holds the Storehouse for household goods. The north-east corner is closed by the North Wall, which follows the road along the back of the plot and has a rear gate set into it. On the west, the West Wall encloses the southern half of that side and serves as a backdrop to the garden. Walls and gates take care of all four sides, binding buildings and garden into one estate, which is why the six are best understood together.

Visiting Higashitada Mushoan

Higashitada Mushoan belongs to a private company. Neither the Agency for Cultural Affairs nor Kawanishi City lists any public or special opening, and none was found under the owner's name (checked October 2026). Assume the grounds are closed and view the buildings only from outside.

The parts easiest to see from the street are the North Wall and Rear Gate, which follow the road behind the plot, and the gatehouse at the front. Please take photographs only from the public road, and do not linger at the gates in what is a residential area.

The nearest stations are Tada and Tsuzumigataki on the Nose Electric Railway Myoken Line; Higashitada 2-chome lies between them, about 10 minutes on foot from either. Change to the Nose line at Kawanishi-Noseguchi on the Hankyu Takarazuka Line. There is no visitor parking, so public transport is the practical choice.
