About the Higashitada Mushoan West Wall

The Higashitada Mushoan West Wall (東多田夢勝庵西塀, Higashitada Mushōan Nishibei) is a late Edo-period roofed earthen wall enclosing the west side of a former village headman's estate in Higashitada 2-chome, Kawanishi City, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2019.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the late Edo period, 1751 to 1830 in its year field, and records it as a tiled earthen wall 14 metres long.

Where the West Wall Runs

The Higashitada Mushoan West Wall is a Tsuijibei running from the south end of the west side of the plot to about halfway along it. It stands on a base of natural stone and is capped with pantiles. The agency describes the North Wall's base as random rubble, but this one as natural stone.

The northern half of the west side lies outside this registration, and beyond it, in the north-west corner, stands the Storehouse with its own attached earthen wall. The 14 metres of the West Wall cover the southern half of the estate's west side.

Two Faces, One Wall

The two faces of the Higashitada Mushoan West Wall are finished differently. The outer face is plastered in thick Shikkui, while the inner face, toward the garden, is left in a rough intermediate coat of clay.

That intermediate coat, nakanuri, is the earthen layer that would normally be covered by a final coat of plaster. The wall shows passers-by a neat white surface and gives the garden the colour and grain of bare earth as a backdrop.

Treating one wall differently on each side suggests it was meant as part of the garden as well as a boundary.

A Backdrop for the Garden

The Higashitada Mushoan West Wall was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The agency says it forms part of the old family's estate and also serves as a backdrop to the garden.

It does two jobs at once: closing the estate off from outside and setting off the garden within. Among the gates and walls of Higashitada Mushoan, it is the only one whose inner face the agency singles out.

Seeing the West Wall

The Higashitada Mushoan West Wall is part of an estate owned by a private company, and no public opening has been announced (checked October 2026). The garden side of the wall cannot be seen.

The outer face of the Higashitada Mushoan West Wall looks west, but whether any public path approaches it from that side has not been checked. If it can be seen at all, do so only from a public road and do not step onto farmland or private land. Directions are on the Higashitada Mushoan page.
