About the Higashitada Mushoan Storehouse

The Higashitada Mushoan Storehouse (東多田夢勝庵土蔵, Higashitada Mushōan Dozō) is an early Meiji-period two-storey clay-walled storehouse for household goods at the north-west corner of a former village headman's estate in Higashitada 2-chome, Kawanishi City, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2019.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the early Meiji era, 1868 to 1882 in its year field, making it the only one of the six Higashitada Mushoan structures built after the Edo period. It records a two-storey clay-walled building with a tiled roof and a building area of 22 square metres, with an earthen wall attached.

A Separate Roof Over a Sealed Box

The roof of the Higashitada Mushoan Storehouse is gabled and laid with pantiles, built in the manner of an Okiyane. In that system a roof frame is set over the clay-sealed body of the store rather than built into it, so the fire-resistant earthen box is kept dry under a timber roof.

The walls are finished in Shikkui plaster with vertical boarding at the base, and the plaster is carried up into the eave soffits so that almost no timber shows. There is a single doorway, near the south end of the east face.

Inside the Storehouse

Both floors of the Higashitada Mushoan Storehouse are boarded. The roof structure is simple: boards are laid straight onto the purlins that carry the roof.

A storehouse for household goods held furnishings, tools and clothing that were not in daily use. Boarded floors on both levels probably kept stored items off the cold, damp earth.

Closing the Back of the Estate

The Higashitada Mushoan Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The agency says it helps form the rear of the estate.

The north-west corner is the point farthest from the front gatehouse. With the North Wall and Rear Gate closing the north-east corner and the West Wall along the west side, the Higashitada Mushoan Storehouse anchors the remaining corner and holds the back of the estate together.

Seeing the Storehouse

The Higashitada Mushoan Storehouse stands at the back of an estate owned by a private company, and no public opening has been announced (checked October 2026). The interior cannot be visited.

Because it sits in the far corner of the plot, probably only part of the roof and gable of the Higashitada Mushoan Storehouse can be seen from the road, although this has not been checked on site. Please photograph from the public road only. Directions are on the Higashitada Mushoan page.
