About the Kajiwara Family Residence Darkroom
The Kajiwara Family Residence Darkroom (梶原家住宅現像室, Kajiwara-ke Jūtaku Genzōshitsu) is a small photographic darkroom built around 1897 on the Kajiwara estate in Oshio, Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2009.
The Darkroom stands west of the inner great storehouse, across a covered walkway. It is a single-storey timber hut measuring 2.3 by 1.5 meters, a building area of 3.5 square meters.
Black Inside, Tea-House Refined Outside
The door of the Kajiwara Family Residence Darkroom opens off the walkway, with small windows on the south and west. Inside, the walls are painted black for developing photographs. The finish leaves no doubt about the room's purpose.
The outside tells a different story. On the side facing the courtyard, the builders used menkawa posts (menkawa-bashira) that keep the rounded edges of the log, and walls of jurakudo clay in the exposed-post shinkabe style. The pantiled roof is a maneki-zukuri with slopes of unequal length. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the result elaborate.

Who in the family took photographs, and of what, is not recorded in the available sources.
