A 1924 Clubhouse Turned Golfers' Lodge
The Kobe Golf Club Chamber (神戸ゴルフ倶楽部チェンバー) is the lodge of a golf club of 1924 in Rokkosan-cho, Nada Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on October 7, 2014 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a single-storey timber building roofed in sheet iron, with a building area of 396 square metres, altered in 1953 and 1974; registration number 28-0596.
From Social Club to Golfers' Lodge
The Kobe Golf Club Chamber began as the Thursday Club, a gathering place built by young Osaka businessmen, which Kobe Golf Club acquired and remodelled (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The club says it was put up in 1924 as a summer retreat and bought by the golf club in 1952.
The building is long and low, entered through a porch in the middle of the south front. A lobby divides it: the east half holds a central corridor and guest rooms, the west half a dining room and lounge (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The club places it among the 7th, 8th and 9th holes.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape: the shallow roof and low profile sit quietly in the mountain-top course.
What to Look For
Look for the shallow-pitched roof, the low profile and the porch at the centre of the south front (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Visiting
The club uses the Chamber for members, their families and accompanied guests. Kobe Golf Club says the course is open from mid-April to mid-November, and guests normally need to play with or be introduced by a member. No official information on public tours of the buildings was found.
