A small 2-storey annex to the gym
The Konan Girls' Junior and Senior High School Physical Education Office (甲南女子中学校・高等学校体育研究室) in Morikitacho, Higashinada Ward, Kobe, is a small 2-storey steel-framed building designed by Murano Tōgo and completed in 1968; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on April 3, 2020 (number 28-0734).
It is attached to the southwest corner of the gymnasium. With a building area of 40 m² it is a fraction of its neighbour's size, but it went up in the same year.
Flared columns and a slim spiral stair
The ground floor of the Konan Girls' Junior and Senior High School Physical Education Office is an open piloti, and the upper room sits on top on a plan shaped like the character 凸. The columns are square in section, flared, and clad in cement board.
A band of windows runs along the upper floor under a thin projecting canopy, and a narrow spiral stair leads up to it. Columns, canopy and stair are all kept slender, and the little building reads as almost weightless, which is how the Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it.
Registration
The Konan Girls' Junior and Senior High School Physical Education Office has a metal sheet roof and was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. Of the eight registered buildings on the campus, only the two guardhouses are smaller.
Visiting
It is a school facility and the interior is not open. Tucked against the gymnasium inside the campus, it cannot easily be seen from outside the grounds.
The school's history and directions to the campus are on the Konan Girls' Junior and Senior High School page.
