A tea room in the east corner of the grounds

The Konan Girls' Junior and Senior High School Tea Ceremony Classroom (甲南女子中学校・高等学校茶道教室) in Morikitacho, Higashinada Ward, Kobe, is a single-storey timber tea room designed by Murano Tōgo and completed in 1971; it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on June 29, 2022 (number 28-0778).

It stands in the eastern corner of the school grounds. Added three years after the move to the campus in 1968, it is the youngest of the eight registered buildings and the only one built entirely of timber.

Hipped roof and copper eave

The Konan Girls' Junior and Senior High School Tea Ceremony Classroom has a hipped roof laid in Sangawara-buki pantiles, with a copper-roofed Tsuchibisashi eave on the southwest. The building area is 70 m².

Inside, the entrance leads to a six-mat and an eight-mat room set side by side from east to west. North of the entrance, a Mizuya preparation room and a washroom project outward.

Plain rooms with glass doors

The rooms of the Konan Girls' Junior and Senior High School Tea Ceremony Classroom are plainly finished and use glass doors among the fittings. The Agency for Cultural Affairs reads this as a clear example of Japanese-style design reaching toward modernism.

It was registered as a model of design, added in 2022 together with the west gate guardhouse. The architect of the concrete and steel school buildings shows a different side of himself in this small timber room.

Visiting

The tea ceremony classroom is a school facility and is not open to the public. It stands inside the campus in its eastern corner and is hard to see from outside.

The school's history and directions to the campus are on the Konan Girls' Junior and Senior High School page.
