Mikage Public Hall

A Modernist Hall at the Heart of Mikage

The Mikage Public Hall (御影公会堂) is a public hall built with a donation from Kano Jihei of 1933 in Mikageishimachi, Higashinada Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on May 10, 2018 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a three-storey reinforced concrete building with one basement and a building area of 1,032 square metres, renovated in 1951, 1972, 2004 and 2017; registration number 28-687.

A Cultural Hall Where the Highway Meets the River

Mikage Public Hall stands at the centre of Mikage, where National Route 2 crosses the Ishiya River (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Built with a donation from Kano Jihei, designed by Shimizu Eiji and constructed by Obayashi, it takes in many forms of expression on a modernist base and pulls them skilfully together.

It has been used for many purposes and is well loved locally (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency notes it as a cultural facility of original design, used in many ways and loved by the community, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.

Visiting

It is a public hall owned by Kobe City (Agency for Cultural Affairs; Kobe City). A Kobe City notice gives Tuesday as its closing day.
