Mikiya
Mikiya (三木屋) in Kinosakicho Yushima, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a hot-spring inn almost in the centre of Kinosaki Onsen whose east and west buildings of 1927 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on October 7, 2014 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The two keep well the look of Kinosaki Onsen as rebuilt after the North Tajima earthquake of 1925.
A Toyooka City Library leaflet mentions Room 26 at Mikiya, where the writer Shiga Naoya stayed, and dates his first visit to Kinosaki to 1913.
The Two Buildings
The east building is a three-storey timber inn with a hipped roof of plain tiles, each floor of the same rectangular plan, with the entrance on the north and the garden to the south. The ground floor holds the lobby and a banquet room, the first floor guest rooms and the top floor a great banquet hall with a boat-bottom ceiling; the Agency calls it a neatly designed Japanese timber inn.
The west building, lower and two storeys high under a hip-and-gable roof, is joined to the east building, with glazed windows on the south, railings on the upper floor and guest rooms on both floors (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each building is described on its own page.
