About the Nagata Family Residence Furniture Storehouse

The Nagata Family Residence Furniture Storehouse (永田家住宅家具蔵, Nagata-ke Jūtaku Kagugura) is a two-storied storehouse built in the middle Meiji period (1883 to 1897) at the Nagata Family Residence in Shitori Nagata, Minamiawaji City, Hyogo Prefecture, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011. It stands behind the detached zashiki and is reached from it by a covered corridor.

The storehouse measures 7.2 meters by 4.6 meters and covers 60 square meters. It is built in the thick-walled Dozo-zukuri manner, with a hongawara tile roof that is gabled at the east end and hip-and-gable at the west.

Why It Was Registered

The Nagata Family Residence Furniture Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a storehouse that conveys how the household lived.

The Nagata Family Residence Furniture Storehouse sits directly behind the detached zashiki, the reception wing, and is linked to it by a corridor. Within the compound it occupies a position that could be used together with the rooms where guests were received.

A Storehouse with Rooms Upstairs

The unusual feature of the Nagata Family Residence Furniture Storehouse is the upper floor, which holds two tatami rooms. A storehouse that people could also sit and spend time in was more than a place to keep things. Small roofs shelter the east and south sides.

The ground floor is clad in vertical boards, while the upper walls are earthen and covered with sheet metal. Minamiawaji City explains that the upper story was originally finished in white lime plaster and now carries white-painted metal sheeting over it, which keeps the white look while protecting the plaster.
