About the Nagata Family Residence Storehouse

The Nagata Family Residence Storehouse (永田家住宅土蔵, Nagata-ke Jūtaku Dozo) is a large storehouse from the late Taisho period (1919 to 1926) at the back of the east side of the Nagata Family Residence in Shitori Nagata, Minamiawaji City, Hyogo Prefecture, and it became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on January 26, 2011. It was renovated in 1975.

The building runs east to west and measures 11 meters by 4.9 meters, with a building area of 75 square meters. It is built in the thick-walled Dozo-zukuri manner under a hongawara tile roof, with a small roof along the south side. Of the nine registered Nagata structures, it is the only one from the Taisho era rather than the Meiji era.

Why It Was Registered

The Nagata Family Residence Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it a large storehouse that helps make up the layout of an old established household.

Its date shows the compound was still being built up decades after the main house. Minamiawaji City, describing the service gate, notes that rice and other goods were carted through it to the storehouse beyond, so the Nagata Family Residence Storehouse was most likely where the farm kept its stores.

A Gable Cut Back for the Road

The roof of the Nagata Family Residence Storehouse is gabled at the east end and hip-and-gable at the west. According to Minamiawaji City, the east end was also hip-and-gable until the road was widened, when it was cut back to a plain gable. The mismatched ends are the trace of that change.

Two doorways open on the front, and the walls are clad in vertical boards up to waist height. High windows pierce the front and back walls; the city describes them as three ventilation windows on each of the north and south sides that let air move through the interior.

Visiting the Nagata Family Residence Storehouse

The storehouse is part of a private home, and its interior is not open to the public.

The east end of the Nagata Family Residence Storehouse appears to face the road, so the cut-back gable may be visible from outside the plot. Look from the public road only, do not enter the property and watch for traffic.
