A Steel Hall of 1955

The Former Kurosawa Junior High School Indoor Gymnasium (旧黒沢中学校屋内運動場, Kyū Kurosawa Chūgakkō Okunai Undōjō) is a steel-framed sports and assembly hall of 1955 in the Kamigo district of Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, added to the national list as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 19 December 2014.

The building covers 387 square metres. It is single-storey with a partial basement, and stands northeast of the main school block, its broad gabled roof of sheet metal taking up one corner of the grounds. Inside, the space rises tall and undivided, and a stage projects from the western gable wall.

The entrance, with a porch, sits at the eastern end of the south side. The void beneath the stage was not wasted: it holds a storeroom and a shower room. A hall of this size in a rural school had to work as gymnasium and auditorium at once, and the plan reflects that.

Steel Wrapped in Timber

The most telling detail of the Former Kurosawa Junior High School Indoor Gymnasium is what happened to the frame. The structure is steel, but the steel members are cased in timber and finished outside with mortar rendering in the manner of a wall that hides its posts. From outside, no metal is visible.

The surrounding buildings, the main block and the technology classroom among them, are timber with lapped board walls. An exposed steel shed in that company would have looked like a different building on a different site. Casing the frame and rendering over it took extra labour, and the likeliest reason is that somebody wanted the campus to read as one thing.

Tall narrow windows run along the walls, and round windows are set among them. Gymnasia are usually designed floor first and elevation later, if at all. Here the play between the vertical openings and the circles pulls the facade together, and the official description explicitly credits the design effort. Where those round windows land on the wall is worth working out in front of the building itself.

Registered for Its Place in the Landscape

Registration number 08-0269 was granted under a different criterion from most of its neighbours: contribution to the historical landscape of the country, rather than setting a standard of design. The Former Kurosawa Junior High School Indoor Gymnasium was valued for what it does to the view, in other words, as much as for how it is made.

Kurosawa Junior High School opened in 1947. The main block followed in 1950, the technology classroom and the cooking room and library in 1951, and this hall 4 years after those. Classrooms first, gymnasium later, is the sequence almost every Japanese school of the period went through as budgets allowed.

Teaching ended in March 2013. The gymnasium was registered on the same day as the main block, the technology classroom, the cooking room and library, and the music classroom, so all five buildings carry the same status.

Visiting the Former Kurosawa Junior High School Indoor Gymnasium

The hall now serves neither sport nor assembly. It belongs to Daigo Town, stays shut to visitors, and carries no signboard of hours or prices. Seeing the Former Kurosawa Junior High School Indoor Gymnasium at close range calls for a phone call ahead to the Lifelong Learning Section of the Daigo Town Board of Education (0295-72-1148), which also handles requests to photograph within the grounds.

Hitachi-Daigo Station on the JR Suigun Line lies about 10 kilometres to the south, roughly 20 minutes by car, and buses are infrequent. The address is 2572-1 Kamigo, Daigo Town, Kuji District, Ibaraki Prefecture, and adjacent lots, a separate lot number from the main block. Standing towards the northeast of the site, the gymnasium is easier to see from the road than the buildings tucked behind the main block. (Information checked September 2026.)
