A Long Postwar Schoolhouse in the Daigo Hills
The Former Makinochi Elementary School Building (旧槙野地小学校校舎, Kyū Makinochi shōgakkō kōsha) is a single-storey wooden school built in 1950 in Makinochi, Daigo Town, Kuji District, Ibaraki Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on May 10, 2018. Daigo Town owns it.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey wooden building with a tiled roof and a building area of 553 square metres, built in 1950, extended in 1961 and renovated in 1998; its registration number is 08-0313. According to the Ibaraki Prefectural Board of Education, the school closed in 1996.
Why It Was Registered
The Former Makinochi Elementary School Building was registered as a building that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes a long wooden school 58 m in length; the interior has been altered, but the exterior keeps the original form of the school well.
The Agency also notes that, as a facility that led the modernisation of the area, it is widely loved by local people. A postwar timber school in a mountain hamlet, it remains a community hub after its closure.
What to Look For
From the front you can take in the full 58 m length. A gabled entrance porch sits at the centre of the clapboard facade, with two tiers of glass windows on either side (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The evenly spaced rows of windows give the building its schoolhouse rhythm.
The roof is gabled and covered in pantiles (Ibaraki Prefectural Board of Education). Note how the small gable of the entrance porch steps forward from the long main ridge.
