A Classical Shopfront of 1930 in Ishioka

The Sugaya Cosmetics Store and Residence (すがや化粧品店店舗兼住宅) is a shop-house in the kanban-kenchiku style of 1930 in Kokufu, Ishioka City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on November 10, 2005 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a two-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 142 square metres; registration number 08-0197.

A Kanban-Kenchiku Shopfront

The Sugaya Cosmetics Store and Residence faces the main shopping street of Ishioka, with a frontage of 7.2 metres and a depth of about 20 metres; it is a kanban-kenchiku building, a timber town house with a Western-style front (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

According to Ishioka City, many such fronts went up after the great fire of 1929. The city says this one was built from the start as a shop for rent and first housed a dealer in eggs.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes the pilasters on the upper front, with Corinthian-style capitals at the ends and Ionic-style ones between, the dentilled cornice and the triangular pediment, which give a weighty face to the street; it was registered as a model of design.

What to Look For

Look for the capitals of the pilasters on the upper front, the dentilled cornice and the triangular pediment at the top (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Ishioka City notes that the pediment carries the shop name.

Visiting

Ishioka City's walking leaflet lists it as a stop, about 9 minutes on foot from JR Ishioka Station, open 9:30 to 19:00 and closed on Thursdays (as of the leaflet).
