A 1577 Shrine Hall of the Momoyama Period

The Taiho Hachiman Shrine Main Hall (大宝八幡神社本殿, Taihō Hachiman jinja honden) is the main sanctuary of Daiho Hachimangu in Daiho, Shimotsuma City, Ibaraki Prefecture; built in 1577, it was designated an Important Cultural Property on April 14, 1906. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives the reading Taiho, while Ibaraki Prefecture reads the name Daiho. It is a sangensha-nagare-zukuri hall, three bays wide with a flowing roof.

According to Shimotsuma City, the shrine is a former prefectural shrine dedicated to three deities: Homutawake (Emperor Ojin), Tarashinakatsuhiko (Emperor Chuai) and Okinagatarashihime (Empress Jingu). Shrine tradition says Fujiwara no Tokitada founded it in 701 by inviting the deity of Usa Hachimangu, and the colophon of an old Tendai sutra copy dated 1179 mentions a Hachiman shrine in the local district, showing that Hachiman worship was already flourishing here by the late Heian period.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records the hall as a three-bay nagare-zukuri building with a copper-sheet roof shaped like thatch. It belongs to the shrine.

Why It Matters

The Taiho Hachiman Shrine Main Hall was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1906. Ibaraki Prefecture and Shimotsuma City note that the hall was built in 1577 by Tagaya Shimosa-no-kami (多賀谷尊経), lord of Shimotsuma Castle, as recorded on the giboshi finials of the railing around the hall. It is an early Momoyama shrine building with a known builder and date.

Shimotsuma City observes that the hall stands tall on thick posts with a solid, weighty presence, while its bracketing is small and intricately assembled, making it a valuable example of regional architecture of the early Momoyama period. The city also points to its calm character, free of showy ornament.

What to Look For

Seen from the side, the long flowing roof sweeping out over the front, the high floor and the thick posts give the Taiho Hachiman Shrine Main Hall its heavy, grounded form. The roof is now covered in copper, but shaped to the full thickness of a thatched roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Then look at the bracketing under the eaves. Compared with the stout posts, the bracket sets are small and finely, intricately assembled; this contrast, noted by Shimotsuma City, is the hall's key feature. The railing finials that record the construction date are also worth seeking out.
