Yuki Sake Brewery Co., Ltd. Brick Chimney (結城酒造株式会社煉瓦煙突) is a brick chimney about 10 meters tall in Oaza Yuki, Yuki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, said to have been raised in 1903 (Meiji 36) and entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on April 28, 2000 (Heisei 12). One structure was registered.
It stands in the brewery yard of Yuki Sake Brewery, in the dense old quarter north of Yuki Station where shop-front storehouses still line the streets. For most of the twentieth century the chimney worked rather than decorated. It drew for the kamaba, the boiler room where water was heated for steaming rice and for pasteurising the finished sake.
The connection was made underground. Both the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Yuki City record that the stack was linked to the kamaba of the Ansei-gura storehouse by a buried flue running north from the brewing floor, so that the working heart of the brewery and its tallest element were joined out of sight.
The company puts its founding in 1594. Yuki City's cultural properties page notes separately that the brewery holds a sake licence dated 1859 (Ansei 6). The two figures come from different kinds of record and are best read side by side rather than reconciled.

The chimney was registered under the criterion for structures that contribute to the historical landscape of the country. Yuki City's description is direct about the reasoning: the stack shows the modernising side of a sake works, and it also functions as a landmark for a town whose prosperity came from commerce and brewing.
Registration is not the same thing as designation. The register was created in 1996 as a lighter instrument aimed at buildings and structures of the modern era, and a great many industrial survivors entered it in the years that followed. This chimney was part of that wave, taken on in 2000 alongside two of the brewery's storehouses.
Note the counting unit. The property is measured in ki rather than mune, the counter used for a roofed building. A chimney is classified as a structure other than a building, which is why the entry in the Agency for Cultural Affairs database reads one ki and files it under secondary industry.
Brick chimneys of this kind were once ordinary across Japanese brewing, milling and dyeing districts. Very few now survive at their original works, and that scarcity is a large part of why Yuki Sake Brewery Co., Ltd. Brick Chimney matters. It is a piece of Meiji industrial plumbing that was never rebuilt in steel.
What the chimney looks like now
On May 11, 2022, fire broke out at the brewery. The Ansei-gura and Shin-gura storehouses, both registered in 2000, and a two-storey wooden house burned down, together something over 1,100 square meters. Reporting at the time recorded that the brick chimney did not collapse.
The consequence is visible on the city's own records. Yuki City's page for the brewery, revised after the fire, now lists a single registered item under the company name: one brick chimney. The storehouses that stood beside it for more than 140 years are gone, and the stack that served them is what remains.
So the thing to look for has changed. Before 2022 the chimney read as one element in a walled complex of dark storehouses. It now stands with far more sky around it, which makes the taper of the shaft and the courses of brick easier to read from a distance than they ever were.

The chimney stands on private ground belonging to a working company, and the site has been in a state of clearance and long-term rebuilding since the fire. There is no ticketed visit and no set opening time. The exterior can be seen from the public streets that run past and behind the plot, and that is how the chimney should be approached.
Brewery tours were advertised before 2022, with advance booking. Conditions on the site have changed since then, so anyone hoping for more than a view from the street should contact the brewery first on 0296-33-3344, or ask the cultural affairs section of Yuki City at 0296-32-1931.
Access is straightforward. The plot lies about 750 meters north of Yuki Station on the JR Mito Line, a walk of roughly 10 minutes through the old commercial streets. Tokyo travellers reach Yuki by way of Oyama on the Tohoku Shinkansen or the Utsunomiya Line, then two stops east on the Mito Line.
