What the Yushin Tsumugi Main House Is
The Yushin Tsumugi Main House (結真紬主屋, Yūshin Tsumugi Shuoku) is a single-story timber dwelling of the late Meiji era at Omachi in Yuki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, entered on the national list as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 9 February 2005. It is the living quarters attached behind and to the south of the shop building that fronts the street, with a floor area of 114 square meters. The roof is hipped in the Yosemune-zukuri manner and covered with Sangawara-buki pantiles, and a tiled awning projects along the south side.
Yuki City takes the dwelling to have gone up at the same time as the shop in front of it. No document states the year. The only written clue sits in the shop building, an ink inscription for Meiji 40, or 1907, which places construction somewhere before that date.
Four Rooms in Two Rows, and a Veranda onto the Garden
Inside the Yushin Tsumugi Main House the living rooms are set in two parallel rows, four in all. The principal room is a 10-mat Zashiki, with an 8-mat anteroom beside it. Counted in Tatami, those two rooms alone account for 18 mats, and they sit at the back of a property whose street frontage is taken up entirely by the shop.
Along the south face of the zashiki runs a hiroen, a broad Engawa veranda one bay deep. It is closed off with glazed shoji, and the garden is seen through the glass. Screens glazed with sheet glass instead of paper spread in Japan from the Meiji era onward, and here the arrangement does something specific: it lets the household look at the garden from a seated position in the zashiki without opening anything. The room stays bright in winter and the weather stays outside.
Mat rooms in two ranks, a light-catching veranda closing the south end. There is no display of ornament in the Yushin Tsumugi Main House. What the plan shows instead is how a merchant family actually organized the half of the property that customers never saw.
The Connecting Bay and Its Fire Doors
A short connecting section joins the Yushin Tsumugi Main House to the shop in front. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database records its width as four shaku; the Yuki City account instead describes an irikawa passage one ken wide lying between shop and dwelling. Whether the two are describing the same element cannot be settled from the wording, and the point would need checking on site.
The junction was built to be closed. Yuki City records a fire door at the boundary with the shop counter and another at the boundary with the Doma earth-floored area, one at each. The building in front is of storehouse construction and resists fire; the Yushin Tsumugi Main House, timber-framed and single-story, does not. The two buildings are joined, and the joint can be shut.
Why the Yushin Tsumugi Main House Is Registered
The registration number is 08-0165, separate from that of the shop building although the date of registration is shared. The criterion applied was contribution to the historic landscape of the country, one of the criteria set out for the Registered Tangible Cultural Property system.
What gives the Yushin Tsumugi Main House its value is that the shop did not survive alone. The dwelling behind it came through as well, still attached, so the two halves of a Meiji merchant property can be read together: where business was done, and where the family lived.
The shop in front changed trade more than once, becoming a tsumugi wholesaler in 1951 and taking the name Yushin Tsumugi in 1980. Through all of it the Yushin Tsumugi Main House stayed what it had always been, a house.
Visiting the Yushin Tsumugi Main House
The Yushin Tsumugi Main House is privately owned and is a lived-in home. Neither Yuki City nor the Ibaraki Prefectural Board of Education publishes any opening arrangement for it, and there are no visiting days or admission charges. Treat the interior as closed.
Because it stands behind the shop building, the Yushin Tsumugi Main House is barely visible from the street. Please do not enter the grounds, and do not point a camera into the garden or the residential rooms. What you can see and photograph from the road is the shop at the front.
The site is about a ten-minute walk north from the north exit of Yuki Station on the JR Mito Line, on the Omachi street. The Yuki City Tourism Association takes bookings for volunteer guides who can explain the buildings of the district. Guide availability changes, so it is worth confirming in advance.
