Komatsu City Nishikigama Exhibition Hall Kiln Shed

The Shed with Two Overglaze Kilns

The Komatsu City Nishikigama Exhibition Hall Kiln Shed (小松市立錦窯展示館窯納屋) is a two-storey timber kiln shed of about 1933 at the Nishikigama Exhibition Hall in Daimonji-machi, Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, which in 2019 was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a tiled roof and a building area of 38 square metres, renovated in 1998, owned by Komatsu City and registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.

The Agency places it south of the main house, facing the street on the west.

Structure

According to the Agency, it is a gabled, pantiled two-storey building, with clapboard on a stone base below and plaster above.

Inside is a stone-paved floor; the east side is open through both floors with two overglaze kilns, large and small, and the west holds firewood below and storage above.

What to Look For

The Agency calls it a rare surviving Kutani kiln shed. Notice the two overglaze kilns set in the double-height space.

The exhibition hall takes its name from these nishikigama, the kilns that fire overglaze painting.
