The House and Painting Workshop

The Komatsu City Nishikigama Exhibition Hall Main House (小松市立錦窯展示館主屋) is a two-storey timber main house of about 1933 at the Nishikigama Exhibition Hall in Daimonji-machi, Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, which in 2019 was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a tiled roof and a building area of 92 square metres, renovated in 1998, owned by Komatsu City and registered as a model of design.

The Agency describes it as the former home and studio of the potter Tokuda Yasokichi in old Komatsu.

Structure

According to the Agency, it faces west across a forecourt to the street, two storeys, gabled and pantiled.

The ground floor has an earth-floored area on the south and four rooms including the shop and reception room on the north; the seven upper rooms were the overglaze painting workshop.

What to Look For

The Agency values it as a modern Japanese-style house conveying the life of a Kutani workshop.

Komatsu City notes that it was the birthplace of the third Tokuda Yasokichi where three generations painted Kutani ware; the upstairs workshop shows a house that was both home and studio.
