A Small-Town Cinema of 1956
The Bandaikan Cinema (萬代舘) is a timber picture house of 1956 in Ichinohe Town, Ninohe District, Iwate Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 1, 2016 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a timber building, mostly single-storey with a 2-storey part, roofed in sheet iron, with a building area of 374 square metres, renovated in 2008; registration number 03-0086.
A Cinema at the End of Main Street
The Bandaikan Cinema stands in the centre of Ichinohe at the end of the main street that crosses the river (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The front is tiled below and rendered in mortar above, and inside, stairs rise left and right from the entrance to a partial upper floor, with seating throughout.
According to the Tohoku Tourism Promotion Organization, Bandaikan opened in 1909 as a puppet theatre in a converted storehouse and began showing films in the Taisho era; the present building dates from 1956 and was renovated in 2008.
Why It Was Registered
The Agency calls it a good example of the many cinemas built across Japan before the period of rapid growth, and registered it as a model of design. The Tohoku tourism organization describes it as the only working cinema in the prefecture left from the heyday of film.
