Former Army Remount Department Rokuhara Branch Residences

The Former Army Remount Department Rokuhara Branch Residences (旧陸軍省軍馬補充部六原支部官舎) in Rokuhara, Kanegasaki Town, Isawa District, Iwate Prefecture, are three army houses, the first of about 1911 and the second and third of 1911, all registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on May 2, 2017 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The first is owned by Iwate Prefecture and the other two by Kanegasaki Town.

The remount department was the army body that raised and supplied horses for the military, and these were the staff houses of its Rokuhara branch (Agency for Cultural Affairs). All three were registered as models of design.

The Three Residences

Residence No. 1, built for field officers, has a weatherboarded Western-style front, Japanese rooms east of a central corridor and a Western reception room to the west, and two entrances, probably for mounting horses (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Residence No. 2 stands across the road to the west, and No. 3 to the north of No. 2. Both are single-storey houses under hipped steel-sheet roofs with the same plan, sharing Western details such as English-bond brick bases and sash windows, and are somewhat plainer than No. 1 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
