A Field Officer's House at the Remount Depot

The Former Army Remount Department Rokuhara Branch Residence No. 1 (旧陸軍省軍馬補充部六原支部官舎第一棟) is an army officers' residence of about 1911 in Rokuhara, Kanegasaki Town, Isawa District, Iwate Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on May 2, 2017 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a single-storey timber house roofed in steel sheet, with a building area of 117 square metres, altered in 2015; registration number 03-0089.

An Officer's House with a Western Face

The remount department was the army body that raised and supplied horses for the military (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Residence No. 1 has Western-style weatherboarded walls; a central corridor divides Japanese rooms on the east from a Western-style reception room on the west (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The house has two entrances, probably to allow officers to mount and dismount their horses (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes that few army residences for field officers survive, and registered it as a model of design.

What to Look For

Look for the weatherboarded Western-style exterior and the two entrances, likely planned with horses in mind (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
