Why It Was Registered

The Oikawa Family Residence main house was registered as a building that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a large town house that preserves the typical form of the Tono region well.

According to the inn, what was valued was the traditional Tono town-house plan with a central passage of beaten earth, and the house came to notice after it was included in a survey of town houses in 1940.

What to Look For

The Oikawa Family Residence main house is two storeys, gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) with a sheet-iron roof and its entrance on the long side. Facing the highway, it has formal rooms to east and west of a central passage. From the west rooms the living quarters run back to the north, and the joi living room at their south end rises open to the roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
