What Is the Sato Family Residence Bathhouse and Lavatory?

The Sato Family Residence Bathhouse and Lavatory (佐藤家住宅浴室手洗場, Satō-ke Jūtaku Yokushitsu Tearaiba) is a single-storey timber building for bathing and washing, built in the late Taisho period on the Yokoya Sake Brewery and Sato Family Residence site in Senmaya, Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2003.

It lies north of the Main House, tucked against the northwest corner of the Miso Storehouse, with a building area of 17 square metres. A small gabled roof sits at the centre, ringed by a lower skirt roof on all four sides, all sheathed in sheet iron. Inside, a central passage separates the bath on one side from the lavatory on the other.

Why It Was Registered

The registration criterion is that the building serves as a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes a small building composed in a sukiya manner, the light, understated style associated with tea-house architecture, and values it as evidence of daily life in a large residence. Its registration number is 03-0039.

What survives of historic houses is often the formal side: reception rooms, grand entrances. The Sato Family Residence Bathhouse and Lavatory records the everyday business of bathing and washing, given a building of its own apart from the Main House.

What to Look For

The roof is the thing to notice from outside. A little gable rides in the middle, and a low skirt of roof wraps around it. Two roof lines on a building of only 17 square metres give it a light, almost pavilion-like look.

That lightness is what the Agency means by sukiya. Set it beside the heavy earthen walls of the Miso Storehouse next door and you can see how builders of the same years changed their approach to suit the use.

Visiting

On opening days of the Senmaya Sake no Kura Exchange Facility, the exterior of the Sato Family Residence Bathhouse and Lavatory can be seen from the grounds free of charge. The operator's website does not mention access to the interior. It sits north of the Main House at the corner of the Miso Storehouse, so look at the two together. Directions, opening days and hours are on the page for the Yokoya Sake Brewery and Sato Family Residence.
