The Gate on the Old Road
The Maruoka Family Residence Front Gate (丸岡家住宅表門) is the street gate of a merchant compound in Shimotakase, Mino-cho, Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture, built in the late Taisho era between 1919 and 1926 and entered in Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 31 October 2022.
It measures 1.7 metres across. The form is a Yakuimon, flanked by short Sodobei wing walls, timber-framed, roofed in Sangawara-buki pantiles with a single course of copper along the eaves. By the numbers it is a small gate. Standing in front of it, what registers first is not the size but the amount of work packed into it.
Next to the Maruoka Family Residence Front Gate stands a Western-style shop building of 1935. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the gate's design as a Japanese-style counterpoint to that neighbour. On the street front of one merchant household, two architectural languages face the road side by side.
Listed for Its Design, Not Its Setting
Japan's registration system records the criterion under which each structure qualifies. The Maruoka Family Residence Front Gate was listed as a structure of exemplary design. Of the eight structures registered on the same day, only the gate and the entrance wing carry that criterion. The other six were listed for contributing to the historic landscape.
The distinction is worth understanding, because it tells you what to look at. The earthen walls and the storehouse earned their place by shaping the street. The Maruoka Family Residence Front Gate earned its place on craftsmanship alone. If you have limited time at the compound, this is where it goes.
The yakuimon form, with struts behind the main posts carrying the roof, belongs by tradition to temples and samurai houses. A merchant family choosing it for a shop frontage was reaching upward. The gate went up in the same late Taisho campaign that produced the entrance wing, the main house and the front earthen wall, and it was designed as the way into that new street front.
What to Look At
Look up first. The Taruki rafters under the eaves of the Maruoka Family Residence Front Gate fan outward, and above them a lattice of bamboo strips supports a Gō-tenjō coffered ceiling. Coffered ceilings under gate eaves are not common. Compressed into a 1.7-metre span, the whole grid falls into view at once.
The panels of the doors are single boards of zelkova. Getting a board that wide without a joint means a tree of a certain age. Even with the doors shut you can follow the grain across each leaf and see how the two were matched.
The wing walls repay attention too. Their roofs are pantiled and finished with Gegyo gable pendants; the walls are black Shikkui plaster; the base is an Araidashi washed-aggregate finish made to read as dressed stone. The line where black plaster meets false stone is what makes the gate look taller than 1.7 metres.
The roof is Yosemune-zukuri hipped. Because only the lowest course is copper, a thin band of green patina runs along the bottom edge of the tiles. The colour difference shows better under cloud than in direct sun.
Visiting
The Maruoka Family Residence Front Gate faces the road and is the most accessible of the eight structures. The doors are kept closed and you cannot pass through. From directly in front, the fanned rafters, the coffered ceiling, the grain of the door panels and the base of the wing walls are all readable from ground level.
There is no interior access. This is the gate of a house people live in, with no reception desk and no visitor parking. Photographing from the public road is fine; pointing a lens through or over the gate is not.
The gate faces east, so morning light falls on its front. If you want to read the coffer grid, come before the shadows deepen. The history of the compound and directions to it are covered on the Maruoka Family Residence page.
