Medieval Tile Kilns below Omizukami Shrine
The Ninomiya Kiln Site (二ノ宮窯跡) is kiln remains at the western foot of the hill in the precinct of Omizukami Shrine at Hakata, Takase-cho, Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture, designated a Historic Site in 1932.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs lists it under the criterion for sites of production and economic activity.
The designation text records two kilns, both thought to date no later than the Kamakura period.
The Kilns
According to the designation text, one kiln is square with its firing mouth facing northeast, two built-in platforms on its floor and channels between and beside them for the heat; tiles, arabesque eave tiles, pottery and a tile inkstone were found.
The other, about 40 shaku (about 12 metres) to the northwest, is roughly round with its mouth facing north, six built-in platforms and vein-like heat channels between them; arabesque tiles were also found there.
What to Look For
Two kilns of different shapes, square and round, preserve their built-in platforms and heat channels well.
Visiting the Ninomiya Kiln Site
The kilns lie at the foot of the hill in the Omizukami Shrine precinct. No official visitor information could be found.
Mitoyo City says the shrine is in Hakata, Takase-cho, about 15 minutes by car from the Sanuki-Toyonaka interchange.
