A Samurai Quarter Laid Out like a Garden Town
The Chiran District of Minamikyushu City (南九州市知覧) is the samurai quarter of Chiran Fumoto, one of the outer castle towns of the Satsuma domain, in Chiran-cho, Minamikyushu City, Kagoshima Prefecture, which in 1981 was selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs classifies it as a samurai town covering 18.6 hectares, selected because its traditional buildings and street layout keep their old form well.
Important Preservation Districts are chosen by the state from districts set up by municipalities; the system protects whole townscapes rather than designating individual buildings.
History
According to the Agency, Chiran Fumoto, now the Chiran District of Minamikyushu City, was one of the 113 outer castle towns of the Satsuma domain and the private domain of the Chiran Shimazu (Sata) family, said to have been laid out in the mid-Edo period.
The street plan centred on the lord's residence survives in its original form.
