A Gate of Round Logs

The Former Kozuma Family Residence Gate (旧上妻家住宅門, Kyū-Kōzuma-ke Jūtaku Mon, also written Kouzuma) is a late Edo period timber gate on the southern edge of the former Kozuma samurai compound at Shimokomaki, 9819-2 Nishinoomote, Nishinoomote City, Kagoshima Prefecture, listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on 2 May 2017.

It is small. The opening measures two metres across, and the whole thing could be taken in from the road in a few seconds. Gates like this reward a slower look.

The type is an udegi-mon, a bracket arm gate. Two main posts carry the roof, and the load is thrown outward by horizontal arms projecting from each post rather than by a wide frame. Behind and in front of each main post stands a subsidiary post, a hikaebashira, bracing the structure fore and aft. The whole arrangement is the cheapest respectable way to roof a gateway in timber, and across Japan it was the standard mark of a warrior household of middling rank.

What makes this one unusual is the material. The main posts are round logs, left in their natural section rather than squared. Round log gates are rare among the samurai gates of the old Satsuma domain, and the city's survey singled out this feature when the gate was designated. The effect at close range is odd and rather good: a piece of formal architecture built from something that still looks like a tree.

Reading the Details

Look up first. The eaves are framed as hitonoki sodaruki, a single row of rafters set at wide intervals, with no second tier and no crowding. Above them sit pantiles, the ordinary ridged and grooved sangawara that came into common use in the Edo period and replaced heavier older tile systems. Nothing here is showing off.

Then look at the lintel. The kabuki, the horizontal beam spanning the two main posts, carries a short strut at its centre. The strut has curved flanking pieces, called oigata, on either side, giving it a silhouette a little like a pack frame, which is what the name refers to. It is the one element on the gate placed purely for the eye.

Finally the bracket arms themselves. Where each arm meets the beam above, the small supporting block is cut with a moulded profile, a kurikata. On a plain gate this is the sort of detail a carpenter includes because he cannot help it. Registration documents describe the gate as simple overall while noting that the ornament sits in the small parts, and this is what that means in practice.

Around the gate the planting matters too. Cycads grow on the compound, sago palms with their stiff radiating crowns, and the registration text names them: with the cycads, the gate presents the aspect of a samurai residence of the warm south. Kagoshima's cycad groves are protected in their own right elsewhere in the city. Standing at this gate, the combination of tiled Japanese roof and subtropical foliage tells you immediately that you are not in Kyoto.

Rebuilt, and Still Registered

There is a complication in the story of this gate, and the city states it plainly rather than hiding it.

The structure now standing was rebuilt in 1985. That fact might seem to sit awkwardly beside a registration that records the gate as late Edo work of 1830 to 1868. The city's investigation, carried out after the national registration, resolved the question in the gate's favour on three grounds. The round log warrior gate is rare in Satsuma terms. The form matches early Showa photographs of the gate closely, so the rebuilding followed what had been there rather than inventing something. And original members from the earlier gate were reused in the reconstruction. On that basis the gate was designated a Nishinoomote city cultural property on 10 September 2024, alongside the main house.

Japan's registration system, introduced in 1996, was built for exactly this kind of case. It sets a lower bar than Important Cultural Property status and is aimed at buildings that hold the historic character of a place, with the expectation that they stay in use and get repaired. A gate rebuilt in living memory from its own salvaged timber, to a form documented in photographs, is a reasonable thing to protect.

Practical points. The gate stands on a conservation site: the main house behind it is under repair and there are no fixed opening hours for the compound. The gate itself faces the approach on the southern boundary and can be looked at from outside without arrangement, which is more than can be said for the interior. Occasional limited openings of the property have been held, five between 2017 and 2019 and one in November 2023, announced locally rather than on a set calendar. Getting there: Tanegashima is served by high speed boat and car ferry from Kagoshima to Nishinoomote Port, and by air at Tanegashima Airport, roughly thirty minutes from town by car. The Kozuma compound lies about a kilometre southwest of the port on rising ground, at the edge of the old Nishinoomote Fumoto samurai quarter. Two other registered houses in the same quarter, the Yaita and Endo family main houses, are close enough to fold into the same walk.

Q&A

QWhat kind of gate is the Former Kozuma Family Residence Gate?
AAn udegi-mon, or bracket arm gate, opening on the southern edge of the compound. Two main posts carry projecting arms that support the roof, with subsidiary bracing posts set in front of and behind each main post. The roof is pantiled over a single row of widely spaced rafters, and the opening measures two metres.
QWas the Former Kozuma Family Residence Gate rebuilt?
AYes, in 1985. The city's later survey found that the rebuilt gate follows the form recorded in early Showa photographs and reuses original members from the earlier structure, and that round log warrior gates are rare in the former Satsuma domain. The gate was designated a city cultural property on 10 September 2024 on those grounds.
QCan the Former Kozuma Family Residence Gate be seen from outside?
AThe gate faces the approach on the southern boundary and can be viewed from outside the compound. The main house behind it is under conservation work with no regular opening hours. Enquiries to the Cultural Properties Section, Nishinoomote City Board of Education, tel. 0997-23-3215.
QWhat decorative details should I look for on the Former Kozuma Family Residence Gate?
AA short strut at the centre of the lintel beam, flanked by curved oigata pieces, and moulded profiles cut into the small bearing blocks where the bracket arms meet the beam. The gate is plain overall, with the ornament concentrated in these small components.
QWhere is the Former Kozuma Family Residence Gate and how do I get there?
AAt Shimokomaki, 9819-2 Nishinoomote, Nishinoomote City, on Tanegashima, about a kilometre southwest of Nishinoomote Port on rising ground. Reach the island by high speed boat or ferry from Kagoshima, or fly to Tanegashima Airport, around thirty minutes from town by car.
QIs the Former Kozuma Family Residence Gate registered separately from the main house?
AYes. The gate holds registration number 46-0120 and the main house 46-0119, both entered on 2 May 2017 as the first registered buildings in the Kumage area. They were designated city cultural properties together in 2024.
