A Medieval Shrine with Strong Kyushu Character
The Hakozaki Shrine Main Hall (箱崎神社本殿) is a late Muromachi main hall at Hakozaki Shrine in Ichiyama, Hishikari, Isa City, Kagoshima Prefecture, which in 1989 was designated an Important Cultural Property.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a three-bay nagare-style shrine with a shelf-like front and a pantiled roof, owned by Hakozaki Shrine.
According to the Agency, the land at Ichiyama was a domain of Hakozaki Shrine in Chikuzen, so its deity was invited here and the shrine built.
Structure
According to the Agency, it is a three-bay nagare-style hall; no record fixes its date, but its style is late Muromachi.
Camphor wood is used for the main members such as posts and brackets, and the head ties between the porch posts are shaped like cusped gables, features of regional character found in old buildings of Kyushu.
What to Look For
The Agency values it as one of few medieval buildings in southern Kyushu, rich in regional detail.
Isa City notes Muromachi features in the frog-leg strut above the front door and the tie beams, and dates it to the early sixteenth century. The inner shrine inside was built with new techniques brought from China in the medieval period. The city relates that ancestors of three local families, on behalf of those who fought against the Mongol invasions, brought the deity from Hakozaki.
