A Wright-Style Villa from the Pine Woods of Tsujido

The Former Kondo Residence (旧近藤邸) is a villa designed by Endo Arata of 1925 in Kugenumahigashi, Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 21, 2002 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a two-storey timber building with a slate roof and a building area of 173 square metres, moved in 1981; registration number 14-0068.

An Endo Arata Villa Moved from Tsujido

The Former Kondo Residence is a businessman's villa moved from the Tsujido Higashikaigan area of the city and preserved here; it was designed by Endo Arata (Agency for Cultural Affairs). According to the Kanagawa Prefecture Tourist Association, it was built in 1925, just after the Great Kanto Earthquake, among the pine woods of Tsujido, and Endo had worked under Frank Lloyd Wright for six years.

The timber house is T-shaped in plan, with part of the crossing raised to two storeys and opening onto a roof terrace (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Clapboarding and fascia boards stress the horizontal lines, and the garden terrace and the fittings show a marked Wright style.

Visiting

It is owned by Fujisawa City (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Kanagawa Prefecture Tourist Association lists hours of 9:00 to 17:00, closed on Mondays (open if a public holiday), on the day after a public holiday and from December 28 to January 4, and a 10-minute walk from Fujisawa Station on the JR Tokaido and Odakyu lines.
