A Steel Truss Bridge of 1913 and 1926
The Hirayama Bridge (平山橋) is a three-span steel truss bridge of 1913 in Tashiro, Aikawa Town, Aiko District, Kanagawa Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on November 8, 2004 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency records a three-span steel truss bridge 112 metres long and 4.5 metres wide, its timber trusses replaced in steel in 1926; registration number 14-0092.
Timber Trusses Replaced in Steel
The Hirayama Bridge crosses a river of the Sagami River system on three steel through trusses of the curved-chord Pratt type, standing on piers faced with stone laid in courses (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each span is 37 metres.
It opened in 1913 with one steel truss on the left bank and two timber trusses on the right, and in 1926 the timber trusses were replaced with steel ones. Today it is used as a footbridge (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
