A Prewar House Near Zushi Beach and Its Postwar Annex
The Sudo Family Residence (須藤家住宅, Sudō-ke Jūtaku) is a private house in Shinjuku, Zushi City, Kanagawa Prefecture, made up of a main house of 1932 and a former boiler room of about 1946, both registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Property structures on 17 February 2022. The address is 2132 Shinjuku 2-chome.
The property lies in the Shinjuku district close to Zushi Beach. The main house occupies the heart of the plot, and the boiler room is a small outbuilding on its north side.
Two Buildings, Two Eras
The two registered buildings of the Sudo Family Residence come from different worlds. The main house is an early Showa family home, renovated in 1966 and again in 2000. The boiler room was put up shortly after the war by GHQ, the Allied occupation headquarters, and was altered in 1952. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a record of postwar Showa history.
The Zushi City Board of Education presented the house, together with the former Shoriki villa in the same district, as buildings that recall the seaside villa culture of Zushi in the early Showa years. What was registered here is a prewar house by the coast and the piece of occupation-era plant that was added to its grounds.
Both were registered in the 101st round, the main house as number 14-0308 and the boiler room as 14-0309, under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the country.
Visiting
The Sudo Family Residence is lived in as a private home, and Zushi City states plainly that it is not open to the public. Neither building can be entered and the grounds are off limits. If you are in the area, keep to the public road and refrain from photographing out of consideration for the residents.
Enquiries about registered cultural properties in the city are handled by the Social Education Division of the Zushi City Board of Education.
