Former Army 44th Infantry Regiment
The former Army 44th Infantry Regiment (旧陸軍歩兵第四四連隊) site in Akebonocho, Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, keeps an ammunition magazine and a lecture hall of the late Meiji period that were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 27, 2023 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Both are owned by Kochi Prefecture.
The Two Buildings
The magazine is a single-storey brick building with walls about 50 centimetres thick, three raised rooms and iron-clad doors; the Agency calls it a rare, almost complete Meiji-period magazine. The lecture hall is a white weatherboarded timber building with king-post roof trusses, a plain piece of army architecture built for the classroom training of non-commissioned officers (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each building is described on its own page.
Conservation and Opening
According to the conservation and use plan drawn up by Kochi Prefecture in March 2026, the two buildings were long used as warehouses. The plan is to make the site a place to learn the facts of the war and feel the value of peace: the grounds are to be open for free viewing on opening days, and the interiors open to visitors who book in advance. No opening date has been given.
