The Shop Half of a Tosa Merchant House
The West Wing of the Fukoe Residence Main House (普光江家住宅主屋西棟, also romanised Fukōe-ke Jūtaku Shuoku Nishi-tō) is the shop section of a merchant house at 2051 Tano, Aki District, Kōchi Prefecture, built in 1924, and entered on Japan's national register of Tangible Cultural Properties on 1 December 2003.
It measures three ken along the ridge by five ken in depth, a proportion that tells you immediately what kind of building this is: narrow to the street, long to the rear, the shape that commercial districts everywhere in Japan produced when frontage was scarce and land behind it was not. Building area is 55 square metres. The roof runs east to west, gabled and laid with sangawara pan tiles, and the entrance is on the eaves side rather than the gable end, an arrangement called hirairi that puts the shop opening squarely on the long face nearest the road.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs classifies both wings of this main house under tertiary industry rather than housing. The storehouse and barns on the same property are classified as residential. That distinction is not a formality. It records what the buildings did.
Earth Floor, Cooking Range, Counter
The interior divides north from south. The northern part, toward the street, is doma: a floor of packed earth at ground level, continuous with the road outside, where customers stood in their shoes and goods came in and out without anyone having to step up. The southern part is the kamaya, the cooking area built around fixed clay ranges.
Placing the cooking range inside the shop wing rather than the living wing was ordinary practice in houses that fed a household, apprentices and sometimes travelling buyers out of the same fires. Smoke, water and mud belonged on the earth floor; the raised tatami rooms of the east wing were kept clear of all three.
The east wing next door held the chōba, the counter where accounts were kept, and the family's living rooms. The two wings carry a single continuous roof frame, which means the shop and the household were conceived as one structure even though they were built more than half a century apart. Read from the road, the Fukoe frontage is one long low elevation under one ridge, the standard face that a merchant house presented to a Japanese main street.
Both wings are recorded as timber tsushi nikai, with a low attic level under the roof slope used for storage. The official structure field lists them as single storey, since the tsushi is not counted as a full floor.
Why Tano Had Merchants Worth Building For
The west wing was registered under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape of the nation, the broader of the two criteria commonly applied to registered structures, and its registration number is 39-0100. Registration came on 1 December 2003 and was gazetted on 25 December of the same year.
That single day added thirty buildings across eleven properties in Tano to the register. It is a large number for a town of 6.53 square kilometres, the smallest municipal area in Shikoku, and the reason lies in the Edo period. Tano held the Aki district magistrate's office and the domain school Tano Gakkan, making it the administrative and educational centre of the eastern half of Tosa. Wealthy merchant houses collected there, and the group known as the Tano Gonin-shu, the five leading merchant families, financed the domain when it needed silver. The foremost of them, the Oka family, trading under the name Komeya, built the mansion in 1844 that the lords of Tosa used as their lodging on tours of the east.
Commerce did not stop with the domain. The town still brews sake, and the brewery buildings of Hamakawa Shōten a short distance away were themselves registered in March 2015. What survives in Tano is not one preserved house but a working street that kept most of its nineteenth and early twentieth century fabric.
The Fukoe Residence is a private home. There is no interior access, no admission fee and no opening hours; the west wing is seen from the public road, which is the vantage point it was designed for. Photography from the street is unrestricted, and visitors should not enter the grounds. Tano Station on the Tosa Kuroshio Railway's Gomen-Nahari Line is about a ten-minute walk away, and Oka Goten, now a prefecturally designated cultural property open to visitors for 500 yen, stands a few minutes further along the same street.

Q&A
- What was the Fukoe Residence Main House West Wing used for?
- It is the shop section of the merchant house. The northern half toward the street is an earth-floored doma where trade took place, and the southern half is the kamaya, the cooking area with fixed ranges. The counter and living rooms were in the east wing next door.
- Can the Fukoe Residence Main House West Wing be visited?
- Not internally. The property is a private residence with no public opening, no admission fee and no set hours. The exterior can be seen from the public road running along the north side of the site.
- When was the Fukoe Residence Main House West Wing built, and when was it registered?
- It was built in 1924, in the thirteenth year of the Taishō era. It was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property on 1 December 2003 and gazetted on 25 December 2003, under registration number 39-0100.
- How is the west wing connected to the east wing of the Fukoe Residence?
- The two are built under one continuous roof frame. The east wing dates from the early Meiji era and was moved to its present position in 1924, the same year the west wing was built, so the whole street frontage took its current form in a single campaign of work.
- What else is worth seeing near the Fukoe Residence in Tano?
- Oka Goten, an 1844 merchant mansion used as the lodging of the Tosa lords, stands on the same street and is open to the public for 500 yen. The town also contains ten other registered properties from the same 2003 batch and the registered sake brewery of Hamakawa Shōten.
