A Temple Gate of 1866 with Side Fences

The Chohoji Temple Gate (長法寺門, Chōhō-ji mon) is a gate built in 1866 south of the main hall of Chohoji in Tano Town, Aki District, Kochi Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 1, 2003 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a timber gate with a tiled roof, 2.8 metres wide, with side fences; registration number 39-0094, owned by the religious corporation Chohoji.

Why It Was Registered

The Chohoji Temple Gate was registered as a structure contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that it feels a little tall for its width, but the board fences on either side give it a stable, balanced appearance.

What to Look For

The gate runs east to west south of the main hall. It is a one-bay Yakuimon gate about one and a half bays wide under a gabled pantiled roof. Its main posts are of flat-sided timber, and the ridge rests on a frog-leg strut (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Tiled board fences one bay long extend on each side (Agency for Cultural Affairs). From the front, note how the height of the gate is balanced by the spread of its side fences.

Visiting

The Chohoji Temple Gate can be seen from outside the temple. No visiting information has been published, so please be considerate of worshippers.
